Our Parent Education Day (PED) held on 10th February for classes 6 and 7 was nothing short of exciting because it revolved around reading for pleasure and parents learned a lot about the magical world of books!
Through the PED, we majorly discussed the benefits of reading among other things. Following was the agenda of the PED:
- Benefits of reading
- What a child wants in a book
- Types of books
- Selecting the right book for your child
- Books at your convenience
- Reading together as a family
Here’s the discussion in a nutshell:
Besides being an amazing pastime, reading for pleasure enhances long-term memory, improves language; vocabulary; and comprehension, and helps kids write better.
However, it would be wrong to force kids to read a certain type of book. Different kids have different interests and likes. It is always advisable to have them choose the kind of books they want to read. Some kids like humor, some others like fantasy, and others like drama. There are also thrillers, cookbooks, comic books, and more that kids are free to choose from.
While going to a bookstore with your kids is a wonderful idea, you may not have enough options or find it convenient all the time. Thankfully, there are sites like www.flipkart.com and www.amazon.in that give you access to numerous different books from different genres to choose from. These sites are extremely convenient and reliable.
Through the event we also threw light on the importance of reading together as a family. Family dinners are a tradition in most households but not many read together. It is important to incorporate this as well and that’s why we usually have PHS Family-Banana Day.
We can positively say that our PED was a success as parents left with a positive mindset and decided to buy good books for their kids. Mr. Ambrish said, “I enjoyed the PED and came to know many new things. I am very excited to give new books to my child.
Reading indeed plays the most integral part in growing up and being all-rounders in the future.
