Plastic Bottle Challenge !

Presidency High School took a big step to clearing up Nizamabad by recycling over 16,650 (245kgs) plastic bottles in April! The high school students collected plastic bottles from their family, friends and local businesses and brought them to school for Aprils ‘Tutor Time Challenge’.

The idea of the challenge was to show students the amount of plastic that people go through in 1 month.  More than 15,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated in India everyday, of which 6,000 tonnes remain uncollected and Nizamabad in no exception with plastic being eaten by buffalos and cows by the side of the road!

Presidency students were amazed by the growing mountain of plastic bottles that began to grow in the corner of the school grounds. Students were not allowed to collect from rubbish piles or endanger themselves but had to find ways to save bottles. Some students made their own recycle bins and placed them around their flats, other students collected from their family and some students contacted function halls and collected large amounts of bottles after weddings and parties.

The winning class was 9 Giraffes who collected an amazing 5,506 bottles in just 3 weeks! Giraffes class teacher Neraj said “I`m so proud of my students, they really wanted to win the challenge but Presidency is the real winner”. Challenge organiser Martin Langford who is from England said, “I come from a country where children are taught the importance of recycling, so I thought by having a practical challenge students would see the amount of waste we are throwing away on a daily basis”. Martin also that, “Plastic bottles can take up to 500 years to degrade so we chose plastic bottles because we all use these at some time during the week and it is a growing problem that won’t just vanish”.

Presidency would encourage other schools to take up the challenge for one month. The students had great fun and it got very competitive. The students who collected the most bottles from each class were awarded a prize. All the bottles collected were sold to recycling merchant for R3000 and Presidency will select a charity here in Nizamabad to donate the money to.

We were looking for a school with a higher teacher student ratio. The curriculum is very well structured, we are impressed with tracking the progress of pupils everyday.
