We are always told about following a healthy, balanced diet. But, what is a healthy diet? What constitutes a balanced diet? Why do we call it ‘balanced’? These questions may have run through every child’s minds but a few children don’t ask upfront.
To answer this and many other similar questions, our class 3 students organized the Food Pyramid on 21 July 2018. They drew a pyramid and placed foods in the pyramid according to the nutrients they give us. The food on top of the pyramid was unhealthy, consisting of chips, cool drinks, sweets, and other such items. Below that came dairy products, meat, eggs, pulses, etc. and so on. Almost all types of food were covered wonderfully in this pyramid by our little students.
Now, children clearly understood that a balanced diet is the one that has a balance of all types of food according to this pyramid. This means that fruits and vegetables should constitute a major part of our diet and junk food, the smallest part.
The organizing children were thrilled as they explained every food group patiently and spelled out their benefits. “I am feeling very happy after Food Pyramid. My students performed well and confidently. The entire event was very well-organized,” one of our teachers shared. Children resonated with the feelings. “I am very excited to introduce the Food Pyramid to parents and students,” Deetya from class III shared.
This wonderful project was an effort to help children understand that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential for a long, happy, and productive life. Projects like these make important lessons fun, making them easier to incorporate and implement. We hope to conduct many such events throughout our academic year.
