Education and learning are a combined effort. Only when teachers and parents come together can they ensure the best learning platform for children. If we rely only on the school to provide our children with education, they will start falling short. Once they come home from school, the kind of environment we create for them plays a major role in shaping their future.
Let’s answer a few hard-hitting questions now: How do you engage children when they are at home and during holidays? Do you buy books for them on their birthday? Do children have the habit of reading books? In order to address this and a few more such concerns related to books, we hosted Parents Education Day on 28th July 2018 for classes I and II.
The entire event revolved around the principle: Raising Readers at Home. Throughout the event, we helped parents understand the importance of fostering reading in every child and how it helps them become good citizens of tomorrow. Books are a crucial aspect of growing up, which we cannot ignore. Learning goes way beyond regular textbooks and we must, as parents, accept and encourage the same.
We also educated parents on choosing the right books for children. There are so many choices today that it is easy to get confused. However, if we consider age, vocabulary, and interests, we can narrow the choices down and make the right choices. Once a child starts reading books regularly, a definite improvement is seen in reading, speaking, and listening skills. In other words, his/her overall communication skills improve drastically. Reading also enhances creativity and improves imagination, concentration, and focus.
After suggesting a series of books that parents can get started with, we also encouraged them to start reading to their children at the tender age of 1. Also, bedtime reading helps children tremendously! Older kids can choose online books if they wish to. There is also an application named RAZ Kids that has a plethora of e-books for children of all ages. We explained the application during the event to make it easy for parents to use it for their kids.
Through the event, we really hope we brought in a change and inspired parents into encouraging kids to read a number of books.
